Haiti finds money for superstar show, but not for documents
President Michel Martelly reportedly paid an exorbitant amount of money to hire international superstars Chris Brown and Lil Wayne that attracted thousands to the free concert in Haiti. The six-hour show was held in Port-au-Prince’s central square, the Champ de Mars, on Friday, 26 June 2015. Breezy and Tunechi each played a 60-minute set amid a slew of other Haitian acts, such as T-Micky, Boukman Eksperyans, Barikad Crew and DRZ.
In the Dominican Republic, social media has gone viral with criticism of the expensive concert that took place at a time when the government of Haiti has said it does not have the funds to document its citizens.
Thousands of Haitians have voluntarily returned to Haiti after not being able to obtain from the government of Haiti essential documents needed to complete their migratory status regularization process in the Dominican Republic.
