Gynecologist was doing cosmetic surgery in Santiago

A preliminary report from the public health authorities in Santiago reveals that the doctors who operated on the two women who died at a beauty clinic in Santiago last week were not surgeons, as reported in Diario Libre. The director of the recertification bureau at the Ministry of Public Health, Luis Tomas Oviedo said that they were not trained or qualified to perform plastic surgery. He said he believes that a gynecologist had carried out the operations at the Instituto de Adelgazamiento, Estetica del Cuerpo y Ginecologia (Ideamec), closed by Santiago prosecutors after the deaths of the two patients.

According to the authorities, the center’s license had expired in November 2014.

Oviedo called a meeting with the cosmetic and aesthetic surgery society to analyze the situation and other related issues. The clinic physicians were not members of the society. “We have information that this clinic is not the only one where aesthetic procedures are being carried out without the endorsement of the specialty, and without the safety conditions that this type of surgery requires,” he said. He said that some centers forge information about their services in order to receive the operation certificate from the Ministry of Public Health. He said that many of these establishments present equipment for non-surgical treatments like massages, laser and botox injections and then go on to carry out liposuction and liposculpting operations, putting their patients’ lives at risk.
