Gonzalo Castillo: “The people are crazy over this President”
SANTO DOMINGO. With the promise that at the opportune time President Danilo Medina will speak out on the issue of reelection, the Minister of Public Works, Gonzalo Castillo, warned that in this sense those who do not hear the people’s cries, will have it catch up with them.
He made it clear that everything will be cleared up at the right time, and that this issue should be dealt with by the organs of the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD), who will have to recognize Medina’s work. “The people are crazy with this President, who is Danilo Medina, and whoever gets in the way of the people, I think that the people will make them pay,” he stressed..
Along these lines, he said that he doesn’t have any doubts that the PLD will take decisions that are both unified and that respect each one of the comrades.
The official indicated that the Dominican Republic is faced with a fundamental opportunity to correct an error which was committed in the 2010 Constitution, where they reestablished the unlimited reelection “and I feel that there is nothing more negative for a country than the unlimited reelection.”
He said that with the current Magna Carta a president will always have the opportunity to seek nomination with one term in the middle, which as he understands things, is close to dual dictatorships.
“A majority larger than absolute wants the Constitution modified in order for President Danilo Medina to be able to run another time for a consecutive term, one and nothing more,” notes the minister.
Castillo asked the people to reflect on this issue, since he feels that we should have more fear of unlimited reelection then two consecutive periods and never again.
He feels that the opportune time has arrived; former President Leonel Fernandez will be on the side of the people, since he has an extensive legacy in the country.
He indicated that Fernandez, by virtue of a reform, could return to seek his own nomination in 2020 in order to be the President of the Republic once again. “The good part of this system is that it is not an eight-year mandate, there are eight years if you do it right and President Medina has done it very well, and it is because of this that people want him to have four more years and are asking that the Constitution be modified.”
He stressed that with the current political system there are no opportunities or manner in which someone can carry out a presidential project.
He referred to the fact that both Hipolito Mejia as well as Miguel Vargas have stated that sovereignty is in the people, letting it be understood that they would support an action of this type. “Candidate Miguel Vargas said that the key is held by Leonel, so this means that he will not oppose (a constitutional reform), Hipolito Mejia, says that sovereignty is in the people and if the people want Danilo then they have to do it,” he noted.
On being questioned with regard to the fact that in 2012, former President Fernandez did not try for a re-nomination in spite of having a population rating of over 60%, Castillo answered: “He said that he would not run for political reasons.”
