Fresh fruit exports sent to Canada and Caribbean
Minister of Agriculture Angel Estevez says that fresh produce affected by the United States export ban due to Medfly has been sent to Canada and French Caribbean islands instead. He said that the important thing is that new markets have been opened.
Estevez said that the country has already requested the lifting of the ban to the United States and is awaiting a response. As reported, last week more than 36 containers of fresh fruit and vegetables were exported to Canada. The Ministry also reported that 25 tons of fruit had been incinerated to prevent the spread of Medfly. Eight specialists from Guatemala and two from the United States are in the country to control the pest, which in any case is not spreading, according to Estevez.
The Minister told the press that the fruits that were banned are not the ones that the flies prefer.
