Four tourists drown at Macao
According to the police, four tourists – a woman and three men – drowned off Macao beach on Sunday afternoon, 1 March 2015. They had been staying at the Ocean Blue resort in Bavaro since Monday 23 February. They were identified as 31-year old Kush Patel, 27-year old Kajal Patel, 30-year old Shivang Jayendra Ramanbhai Patel and 33-year old Jay Patel. There are conflicting reports about their nationalities, but apparently they were all Kenyan nationals of Indian origin, resident in the United States.
As reported in Hoy, divers retrieved the bodies. The victims were swimming in an area that is off-limits to bathers, but it is unclear whether they were aware of the risks. According to eyewitnesses, the woman got into difficulties and the four men who were with her tried to rescue her, but they were also overcome by the powerful rip current.
Macao, to the north of the Punta Cana-Bavaro area on the east coast, is a beach mostly frequented by surfers. Safety there has been improved thanks to the surfing clubs whose instructors have undergone lifesaver training, but the beach is known to have areas where there are dangerous rip currents.
Macao Surf Camp instructors Jonathan de la Rosa, Edicson de la Rosa, “El Chocoloso” Castillo and Israel Mercedes were able to rescue one of the five affected tourists.
