Forestry arsonists arrested
Dominican authorities have arrested 13 people for alleged involvement in starting the forest fires that have affected several parts of country over the last few weeks, including environmentally protected areas like Los Haitises National Park.
Environment Minister Bautista Rojas said that they would be formally accused, as setting a fire is a criminal act. The worst blaze has burned more than 10 square kilometers of the Valle Nuevo National Park in the central mountain area.
The flames reached the sector known as the Colonia Japonesa in Constanza and the smoke caused local tourism activities to be cancelled.
Rojas said that the fire has now been extinguished, and two men had been arrested on suspicion of starting at least one of the blazes. He pointed out that some rural people are still using environmentally destructive slash and burn methods. The other 11 arrests in other parts of the country are reported to include one Haitian.
