Forest fire in El Choco national park
Tuesday afternoon the brigades of the environmental service, air force and Civil Guard managed to get a forest fire near the protected area in El Choco under control.
The week-long heat wave plaguing the north of the Dominican Republic, severely affected the vegetation by drought. Wildfires have emerged in various parts of the country in recent days. This also happened in the forested area of El Choco which is located 5 kilometers from Sosúa. Due to the swift action taken by the various brigades the fire was controlled with machetes, shovels and water. The brigades made firebreaks between the area in fire and the nature reserve. This way the fire had no chance to expand any further. Experts from the fire brigade did not rule out the fact that the fire was deliberately started. The police was questioning residents who might have observed something suspicious.
