First Lady launches diagnostic center
First Lady Candida Montilla has launched the construction of a laboratory in the Robert Reid Cabral Children’s Hospital to carry out neo-natal analysis for diagnosing metabolic illnesses in newborn babies.
At the ceremony yesterday, Tuesday 8 December 2015, the First Lady was accompanied by Public Works Minister Gonzalo Castillo and the Minister of the Presidency Gustavo Montalvo as well as hospital authorities and health sector representatives.
The First Lady said that the first stage of the program to take samples from the newborn babies would begin in the maternity hospitals of Our Lady of Altagracia, the Dominican Women’s Hospital and the San Lorenzo de Los Minas Hospital. It would then be extended to other parts of the country in the second phase.
She added that the testing would enable the identification of congenital hypothyroidism and sickle cell anemia, along with other illnesses.
