Fire in Puerto Plata causes big losses
PUERTO PLATA. – A raging fire that occurred around noon on Thursday, completely consumed an old house made of wood with zinc roof on Calle Padre Castellanos near the corner of Duarte, causing millions in losses because in this building there’s a warehouse of Distribuidora González Store.
Such loss caused moments of tension in the population because it took place in the center of the city of Puerto Plata, since the wooden house burned up with surprising speed, was located next to the building housing the stations of Radio Puerto Plata, Romance FM and First 99.7 FM, plus 3 TV channel, Musa media, the fire occurred less than three meters from City Hall and the branch of Banco del Progreso.
Several units of the fire brigade of Puerto Plata were deployed to the place, but supposedly they ran out of water so it was necessary that the liquor company Brugal send a tanker to stop the flames threatening to spread to other places. The cause of fire is still unknown.
Because of the magnitude of this fire several businesses operating in the vicinity of Padre Castellanos Duarte were forced to evacuate their staff including two bank branches, offices of Telecable Puerto Plata and staff working at Circuito de Radio y Televisión Musa, the latter being a telecommunication company most affected by the accident, cut both radio and television broadcast networks.
Attracted by the immense column of smoke covering the sky, hundreds of citizens and curious people crowded near the fire, so firefighters had to close the traffic on the streets Padre Castellanos and Duarte.
