European Union to help with Medfly
According to the European Union representative in the country, Alberto Navarro, the EU is willing to help the Dominican Republic to fight the outbreak of Medfly, which is affecting exports of certain fruit and vegetables to the United States.
He said that the ban should not be imposed on the whole country but only the east of the country where the outbreak was found at the Punta Cana International Airport. He commented that Medfly is endemic in Europe and only affects crops and not people.
Navarro said he would be meeting with Agriculture Minister Angel Estevez to discuss the matter.
