Estrella seeks wild card to play in Olympics
The best Dominican tennis player of all times Victor Estrella now is working to be the first Dominican to compete in tennis in the Olympics. Estrella told the local press he did not participate in the Pan Am Games in Toronto this year, an important Olympics qualifier, because he wanted his country to advance in the Davis Cup championship. His dream for his country was achieved when the DR passed to the World Group in the event by eliminating Ecuador on 17-19 July 2015 in Santo Domingo.
The Dominican Tennis Federation has petitioned the Olympic Committee that Victor Estrella by virtue of his ranking or via wild card be allowed to compete in the Olympics. Estrella is ranked 51st by the Association of Tennis Professionals, and is the best in Central America and the Caribbean. In the Americas, he is only behind Milos Raonic and Vasek Pospisil (Canada), John Isner (USA), Pablo Cuevas (Uruguay), Leonardo Mayerdo and Juan Monaco (Argentina). The president of the Tennis Federation, Persio Maldonado, says the Dominican Tennis Federation is seeking that the Estrella’s bid via a wild card be presented by the Confederation of Tennis of Central America and the Caribbean (Cotecc).
