Eat more fresh fruits and vegetables
Hot weather is on the way, and now is the time to eat fresh fruits and vegetables. National producers need local consumers to step up their consumption. Bargain prices for premium produce are hitting the markets. For instance, Jumbo is advertising papaya for RD$11.95 a pound.
Supermercados Nacional is advertising bell peppers for RD$19.95 per pound. One pound usually sells for up to RD$60 in supermarkets. Time to make peperonata, stuffed peppers, red pepper soup and more. The RD$19.95 price for peppers is only valid today, Tuesday, 24 March 2015.
The surplus is the result of a recent US government export ban on certain fruits and vegetables after MedFly was detected on a shipment that was in transit through the Punta Cana International Airport and reported by the local authorities. Fruit affected by the insect is harmless to humans, but the concern is that it could enter the US and affect local farms.
