DR women’s volleyball team loses to USA in PanAm Cup finals
Defending champions, the Dominican Republic women’s senior volleyball team lost to the United States in the gold medal match of the 14th Women’s Volleyball Pan American Cup. The US won in straight sets 3-0 (25-20, 25-20, 25-15) in Lima, Peru on Sunday, 21 June 2015.
The US dominated in all aspects of the match, including spikes (43-27), blocks (11-5) and serving aces (4-2).
The DR had earned a ticket to the finals after defeating Argentina 3-1 (25-23, 25-20), 23-25, 25-21) in Lima on Saturday, 20 June 2015. The organizers of the event, Norceca reported that the Dominicans held the advantage in blocks 13-8 with Marianne Fersola leading the way with four and took the win despite giving away 35 points via unforced errors.
The leading scorers for the Dominican women were Yonkaira Pena, Gina Mambru and Marianne Fersola with 16 markers each. Brayelin Martinez contributed 10 points in the winning effort in the semi-finals.
The Dominican Republic women’s volleyball team is ranked 6th in the world, Argentina is ranked 14th as of October 2014, according to the FIVB. In Norceca region, the DR is ranked second to the United States.
Norceca reports that the USA is now tied with Cuba at the top of the all-time list in gold medals with four at the annual intercontinental event. The DR and Brazil, the only other countries with titles in the history of the competition, both having won titles three times.
