DR wins gold in weightlifting in Pan Am Games
The Dominican Republic won gold and bronze medals in the first day of weightlifting competitions at the Pan Am Games in Toronto, Canada. In the women’s 48 kg weightlifting competition. 22-year old Candida Vasquez Hernandez won gold with a PanAm record of 181(kg). The previous record was 177 kg held Tara Nott of the USA during competition in the Winnipeg 1999 Pan Am Games.
Vazquez’s teammate, 20-year old Beatriz Piron Candelario, took the bronze in the same event (score 175 kg), with Colombia’s Ana Segura winning silver with 180 kg.
Yafreisy Silvestre took bronze in the 53 kilos category n but her teammate, Yuderkis Contreras, who had won gold in the category in the two previous Pan Am Games, was not able to finish the competition. Contreras performed admirably, but she could overcome the effects of having had surgery in November 2014.
In the men’s 56 kg division, Luis Garcia Brito of the Dominican Republic earned a bronze medal with a score of 256 kg.
