DR to play Germany in Davis Cup
The Dominican tennis team is now ranked 23rd in the world in the Davis Cup competition after the weekend defeat of Ecuador. Next the country will match the best of Germany in the Davis Cup playoff games to be played in the Dominican Republic.
As a result of the draw held in London on Tuesday, 21 July 2015, the Dominican Republic won the right to host Germany. The matches for the 2015 BNP Paribas Davis Cup World Group play-offs will be held on 18-20 September.
The Dominican Republic is through to the World Group play-offs for the first time in its history. The home court advantage is certainly a boost to Dominican Republic’s chances.
DR advanced to the play-off stage largely thanks to top-50-ranked player Victor Estrella, who gave up the chance to earn a medal at the Pan Am Games to help the team reach Davis Cup playoffs. Estrella won three points in the nation’s 3-2 victory over Ecuador over the weekend in Santo Domingo. The Dominican men’s team now has a shot at the game’s elite and is counting on Estrella once again to lead the group to victory.
The Davis Cup website highlights: “It’s been a remarkable rise for the Dominicans, who were competing in the bottom tier of Davis Cup as recently as 2002.”
Persio Maldonado, president of the Dominican Tennis Federation says that technicians have yet to choose the site of the playoff games. They are evaluating the Santo Domingo Tennis Club (La Bocha), Parque del Este (site of the Pan Am Games), Centro Espanol in Santiago or Casa de Campo courts in La Romana.
The winners will play in the 2016 World Group with the losers competing in the regional-based second tier group.
