DR defeats Canada in first win in Pan Am volleyball
The Dominican Republic women’s volleyball team, ranked 6th in the world, defeated their hosts Canada in straight sets 3-0 (25-15, 25-13, 25-15) in Pool A of the women’s volleyball tournament at the
Pan American Games at Exhibition Centre of Toronto on Thursday, 16 July 2015.
Gina Mambru led the Dominican offensive with 14 points, including four aces, while Yonkaira Pena added 12 points and Brayelin Martinez finished with 8 points. Dana Cranston was the highest scorer for Canada with 9 points, reported Norceca, the regional volleyball organization.
The Canadians gave away 30 points through unforced errors to only 14 by the Dominican side. The winners held the advantage in aces 6-1 while the home team had the edge in blocks 5-4.
Marcos Kwiek, coach of Dominican Republic team: “We are very pleased with the victory. It was a great debut for us. I am happy with the performance level we showed today and I feel confident that the team will keep growing as the tournament proceeds. We still made a couple of errors we must try to avoid in the future, but overall, I’m satisfied.”
Gina Mambru, player of Dominican Republic: “We knew that this was going to be a very tough match, because we facing them on their home court in front of their raucous fans. We just had to keep our concentration and play our game. We were not complacent at all, we went out and put into action every minor detail that we’ve practiced and everything ended perfect”.
Arnd (Lupo) Ludwig, coach of Canada commented, “I think we made too many mistakes today. For us it was difficult to get into the game. Dominican Republic had a really good serving match. They started right away with four aces.”
The Dominican team next faces Argentina at 3:30pm on Saturday, 18 July 2015, Cuba on 20 July at 3:30pm. The quarterfinals begin on Monday, 22 July.
