DR could be regional center for liver transplants
According to the Taiwanese Ambassador, Tomas Ping-Fu Hou, the Dominican Republic and Taiwan are assessing the possibility of setting up a liver transplant unit, which would be the main center for such operations in Latin America.
Ping-Fu-Hou held a meeting with President Danilo Medina, together with the Director and Liver Transplant Program Superintendent of the Chang Gung Memorial Hospital and Academician, Chinese Academy of Engineering, Chao-Long Chen at the Presidential Palace yesterday, Tuesday 17 February 2015.
The diplomat said that they were currently studying the options as part of the cooperation programs in place between the two countries.
Long Chen, a well known liver transplant specialist in China, Singapore, Japan and the Philippines as well as in Taiwan and other Asian countries, said that the Dominican Republic could become a major center for liver transplants in Latin America and that the next stage was to come to a formal agreement, decide which hospital would be used as the center in order to train Dominican doctors in the procedure.
