Dominicans promote farm produce in UK
A high-ranking Dominican delegation attended the London Produce Show & Conference that was held from 3-5 June 2015 at the Grosvenor House. Business meetings were held as part of Dominican Week, coordinated by the Dominican Embassy in London.
The Dominican participation was coordinated by the Dominican Republic Center for Export & Investment (CEI-RD). Executive director Jean Alain Rodriguez said the platform was ideal for promoting Dominican produce abroad, getting to know the competition, promoting new products and striking deals. This is the first time the DR has taken part in the event.
The Dominican delegation was made up of the Caribbean Greenhouse, Alpha Asset Management, Agromarvela, SWG Dominicana, Tropifruit, CHG Trading and Grupo Banamiel companies. The participation also had the support of the Ministry of Tourism and the Dominican Agribusiness Board (JAD) and the Dominican Embassy in London.
A number of representatives of the Dominican business sector, including National Business Council (Conep) president Rafael Blanco Canto, Fernando Gonzalez Nicolas, president of the Roundtable of Commonwealth Countries in the Dominican Republic, and Osmar Benitez, executive president of the Dominican Agribusiness Board attended the event.
The products that were being promoted include hot peppers, organic and conventional bananas, aloe vera, avocados, coffee, cacao, mangos and bell peppers.
Rodriguez also spoke at the Caribbean 2030 event in London last week, addressing trade and investment opportunities between the UK and the Dominican Republic. He highlighted that trade between both countries had exceeded US$255 million in 2014 and around US$1.6 billion over the past five years.
