Dominican Winter League Baseball update

The Dominican Winter League played a full schedule yesterday evening, Wednesday, 11 November 2015. In Santo Domingo’s venerable Estadio Quisqueya, the Leones del Escogido ended a 38-inning drought and managed to score some runs. On the way, good pitching by Jordan Norberto led the Leones to a 3-1 victory over the league-leading Estrellas Orientales. The win ended a four-game skid for the Leones, now at 10-9 and in third place.

In San Francisco de Macoris, the defending champion Gigantes del Cibao played hosts to the first place Tigres del Licey in the Julian Javier Stadium. The Gigantes managed to get in a squeeker by the score of 6-5. Adrian Salcedo threw six scoreless innings, facing just 21 batters and giving up three hits. In the meantime the Gigantes had scored five runs in the very first inning and scored the eventual winning run in the seventh inning off a homerun by veteran Matt Joyce. The victory halted a two-game skid for the Gigantes, now at 9-12, while the Tigres are still well above the .500-mark at 12-8.

Finally, over in La Romana’s Estadio Francisco Micheli, the Aguilas Cibaenas defeated the Toros del Este by a score of 7-0, thanks in large part to Alfredo Marte’s homerun and four RBIs along with the excellent pitching by Angel Castro who threw six scoreless innings and gave up just five hits to earn his second victory of the season (2-0). Zoilo Almonte contributed three hits to the Aguilas’ offense. The win was the third in a row for the Aguilas, who managed to leave the basement and earn a tie in fifth place.
