Dominican Republic gets women’s bronze medal in volleyball
TORONTO, Canada, July 25, 2015 – The Dominican Republic defeated Puerto Rico 3-1 (25-22, 25-22, 22-25, 25-21) to win the bronze medal at the women’s volleyball of the Pan American Games at Toronto Exhibition Center on Saturday. It is the second medal in the Pan American Games volleyball history for the women’s Dominican team who won the gold at home in Santo Domingo in 2003. Veterans Annerys Vargas and Prisilla Rivera, who were members of the gold medal team twelve years ago, were among the most productive offensive players in the match with 13 and 10 points, respectively, with Vargas recording seven blocks. Brayelin Martinez had 12, Gina Mambru added 10 and Yonkaira Peña came off the bench to contribute nine valuable points. Puerto Rican Karina Ocasio led all the players in the match with 27 points, 25 via attacks. Aury Cruz and Stephanie Enright finished with 13 and 10, respectively, in the loss. Puerto Rico committed 37 unforced errors to 25 y the winners.
