Dengue cases on the rise
Over the last few days the number of dengue cases seen by the Robert Reid Cabral Children’s Hospital in Santo Domingo has increased and one child who had dengue symptoms has died.
Deputy Director Dr. Clemente Terrero said that the increase started last week and they are seeing many cases from other parts of the country where children are seriously ill by the time they reach their hospital.
He said that the body of the child who died was undergoing an autopsy to try and establish the cause of death. The two-year old had been transferred to the capital from Jaime Sanchez Hospital in Barahona. Dr. Terrero added that last week there was no more room to treat dengue patients so they were being sent to other hospitals.
He advised parents to take their children to a doctor as soon as they had a fever and to take them back again if the fever persisted, and to take precautions against the mosquitoes that carry dengue.
