Defense Ministry “seals” frontier over situation in Haiti
SANTO DOMINGO. Given the climate of political instability which Haiti is experiencing, the Ministry of Defends decided “to seal” the frontier with intense patrols composed of personnel that are highly trained, and ready to enter into action against any adverse situation that might present itself.
Yesterday groups from the Haitian opposition, called for civil disobedience, which is the same as ignoring the government of President Michel Martelly.
Nevertheless, given this situation General Carlos Aguirre, the Cesfront commander, denied that they would increase security on the frontier and added that with the soldiers that are patrolling there is sufficient control to deal with any problems that could come up because of the call issued by the opposition.
Aguirre said that there are constant patrols which go from one place to another and this has attracted the attention of many people.
The high ranking official said that after launching the so-called “Operation Shield”, they have halted the entry of illegals which for this period, year after year, try to enter the country in the company of relatives who are returning after spending Christmas vacations in Haiti.
In the first 14 days of the month of January, soldiers from the Armed Forces have returned more than 15,000 Haitians, nearly 1000 per day.
General Aguirre explained that the troops in the field are well-equipped and patrol the area providing guarantees that the frontier does not experience regrettable incidents and he added that they have taken all the precautionary measures necessary.
Each Haitian that is arrested trying to enter the country illegally is minutely examined with the aim of determining his true identity and trying to establish whether he is a fugitive from Haitian justice. One source in the Ministry of Defends told the Diario Libre that the soldiers are rotated in the frontier areas every two weeks.
