Danny to become first hurricane in the Caribbean
According to the US National Hurricane Center (NHC), a new tropical storm named Danny has formed in the Atlantic. TS Danny is expected to develop into the first hurricane of the year by Thursday, 20 August 2015.
The NHC said that the system currently has sustained winds of 55 kilometers an hour and is travelling west northwest at 22 kilometers an hour as of late Tuesday, 18 August 2015.
The system is expected to reach the Caribbean waters by Friday 21 August.
As of yet no coastal watches or warnings are in effect, but this is a storm that should be monitored closely by those in the Caribbean.
Gloria Ceballos, director of the Metereological Office (Onamet) said that Danny could bring needed rains to the Dominican Republic but that it is too early to tell. The storm could pass on next Monday or Tuesday.
