Cuba wins Caribbean Series, Dominican Republic does not reach the finals
Cuba’s Vegueros de Pinar del Rio defeated Mexico’s Tomateros de Culiacan 3-2 to win the Caribbean Series on Sunday, 8 February 2015.
This was Cuba’s first Caribbean Series after a 55-year absence from the regional baseball league. Cuba last played regional ball in 1960, when the Elefantes de Cienfuegos won the title in Panama City.
In this year’s tournament being held in Puerto Rico, Cuba lost to Mexico during their first match on day one of the series. The Mexicans thus failed to win their fourth title in the past five championships.
Playing in their first Caribbean Series, the Dominican team, the Gigantes del Cibao, failed to make it to the final round when they lost 5-4 to Mexico on Saturday, 8 February. And Cuba defeated Venezuela 8-4 that same day. Venezuela had won all their previous games, but lost the most important one.
Slugger Frederich Cepeda of Cuba was voted the Most Valuable Player of the series.
