Colossal fire at sugarcane fields caused panic in Montellano
PUERTO PLATA Tens of acres of cane planted on land owned by the State Sugar Council (CEA) in the village of Montellano, were burned last night by unknown people, a situation that caused residents in that town moments of tension because the flames threatened to reach dwellings located in adjacent residential.
The fire expanded rapidly due to drought and dry leaves and grass are good conductors of flames that threatened to advance all the way to the road of La Gran Parada.
CEA representatives explained that the burned cane fields belong to the mill of Montellano and for that reason “this criminal attack” caused millions in losses.
Likewise, officials of the Central Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DICRIM) of the National Police arrested several people, but then checked their innocence and got them released.
