CEA retakes Montellano sugar mill
The director of the State Sugar Council (CEA), Jose Joaquin Dominquez Pena has repossessed the Montellano sugar mill following a decision by the Court of Appeals of Puerto Plata. The court accepted the suit presented by the government against the company Consorcio Industrial Canabrava, SRL, and the Consorcio Azucarera and Biocombustible Quisqueya (Cabioqui).
In a press release quoted in El Nuevo Diario, the CEA said that as soon as they were notified of the appointment of Dominquez Pena as the temporary administrator, he ordered an audit of all the Montellano sugar mill properties.
The Montellano mill is one of the smallest in the country but has the potential to become a major tourist attraction as well as a sugar supplier for local consumption and export.
Appeals Court decision returns full control of the sugar mill and its properties to the CEA. As reported in El Nuevo Diario, sugar growers in the area as well as community leaders and local politicians have expressed their approval for the decision.
