Cabarete: The Perfect Destination to Learn and Practice Windfsurfing

The ocean winds and the natural set up of the beaches in Cabarete, on the country’s beautiful north coast, makes it the perfect destination for all those who practice or who want to learn how to windsurf.

Situated just minutes from Puerto Plata, the north coast most important tourism destination, Cabarete has some of the best windsurf training schools in the region.

Windsurfing originated back in 1935, when California surfer Tom Blake modified his surf board by mounting on it a mast and a sail.

The goal was to be able to surf at much higher speeds over the surface of the water.

National and international windsurfers began to discover Cabarete in the seventies, years before the aquatic sport was introduced as an Olympic discipline in the Los Angeles Olympic Games in 1984.

This exciting water sport combines surfing and sailing, for the perfect adrenaline rush.

In order to propel the board, the attached sail needs perfect and constant winds. Cabarete provides just the right combination of wind and surf, especially on Kite Beach, a mecca for lovers of this sport.

Kite Beach is also known for the number of recognized windsurf schools that teach future windsurfers all they need to know about the sport.

The Professional Windsurfers Association organizes many events during the year in Cabarete, where the Cabarete Race Week is of particular importance. Windsurfers from all over the world participate in this popular international event.
