Bethania de la Cruz wins European Champions League
27-year old Dominican volleyball player Bethania de la Cruz was named the best player and best spiker of the match in which her team captured the title of the European CEV Champions League. She played for Eczacibasi Vitra of Istanbul, Turkey against Unendo Yamamay of Busto Arsizio, Italy 3-0 (25-22, 25-20, 25-21) at the Azoty Arena in Szczecin, Poland on Sunday, 5 April 2015. De la Cruz scored 13 points. In the game, Eczacibasi Vitra came from behind to take the first set after trailing 7-8 and 12-16 at the technical time-outs and then dominated the next two frames of the decisive match.
With the win, Eczacibasi Vitra qualified to play in the World Clubs Championship to take place in Zurich, Switzerland. De la Cruz finished the European Champions League with 200 points in 12 matches covering 43 sets for an average of 16.67 per match and 4.65 per set.
Diario Libre reports that this is the first time that a Dominican has won a title in the Championship League.
Bethania de la Cruz is the captain of the Dominican women’s volleyball team, ranked sixth in the world by the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB).
