Artists Paint Murals in Public Areas of North Coast Community

Some 38 national and international muralists participated in the Festival of Murals, known as the “Arte-Sano” (Healthy-Art) Festival. The artistic event was held in Rio San Juan, a small oceanfront community situated in the country’s northeast section.

This activity, co-sponsored by the local Lions Club, will be the starting point for the creation of a cultural tourism corridor in the area, known for its spectacular beaches, mountains and other natural wonders.

The project is the brain child of Dominican artist Elio Mercado.

Rio San Juan is situated some forty miles east of Cabarete and Puerto Plata, important tourism destinations in the country’s north coast.

Spectacular Beaches

The Rio San Juan region is known for its beautiful beaches. The most famous, by far, are Caleton and Playa Grande beaches.

Caleton Beach:

According to readers of TripAdvisor, the popular online travel website, Caleton Beach is situated in a pristine area surrounded by mangroves. Boat tours are very popular, and will take visitors to beautiful snorkeling areas. Glass bottom boat tours are also available.

Playa Grande:

The beach is famous for its spectacular waves, ideal for surfing and boogie boarding. Parking and other services are available, including fresh seafood restaurants.

Hotels

The largest hotel in the area is the all-inclusive Spanish-operated Bahia Principe Rio San Juan, with 548 rooms. However, the area is known for its quaint and small hotels. Most popular: Apart-Hotel Las Flores (six rooms and a bar); Bahía Blanca (20 rooms, restaurant and Wi-Fi); Villa Belia (eight rooms, outdoor pool and Wi-Fi); “Las Puertas del Paraiso,” (seven rooms, outdoor pool, buffett breakfast, a la carte menu, Wi-Fi); “La Playa Grande Golf Villa #1 (eight villas, outdoor pool, golf course and Wi-Fi), and the Caleton Apartments (two rooms).
