Are Foreign NGOs Rebuilding Haiti Or Just Cashing In
A story published in Foreign Policy in Focus on 10 July 2015 looks into how millions of dollars donated to Haiti end up in the coffers of non-governmental organization (NGO) whose leaders pay themselves exorbitant salaries and siphon off other funds to pay for ‘administrative and managerial’ expenses, leaving but a pittance that actually goes directly to the beneficiaries that these organizations supposedly support. The feature estimates that there are upwards of 10,000 NGOs registered in Haiti; a number that is so high that Haiti is often referred to as the ‘Republic of NGOs’.
