Amendments to extradition treaty were cosmetic
National Drugs Council president Fidias Aristy has described the amendments to the extradition treaty with the United States as “simple makeup”. He said that all that was done was add new technology crimes.
He said the treaty still prevents drug traffickers who reach agreements with the US judiciary from being tried here once they are tried in the United States.
He said that as a result, many convicted drug traffickers have been able to return to enjoy their immense fortunes in the country.
He mentioned the case of Antonio del Rosario Puente (Tono Lena) who controlled the eastern region drug operations and was convicted and sentenced to 72 months in jail in Puerto Rico.
Aristy has said that this situation of impunity only encourages drug traffickers here.
