Youngsters of Puerto Plata earning thousands of pesos collecting plastic bottles sold to recycling company in Santiago

PUERTO PLATA In a move that helps clean up the environment, a group of young residents in various sectors of Puerto Plata are collecting tons of plastic bottles from the edge of the beaches to sell them to a recycling company in Santiago.
Richard Martinez assures that every time it rains they can collect two thousand pounds of bottles (one ton) on the coastline from crabs to Cofresí, which then they sell to Recicladora Cibao SRL company, whose marketing slogan is “Everything can have a second life”.
The recycling of waste in the country now moves around  RD$100 million a year, according to Domingo Contreras, Coordinator of Environmental Policy Ministry of Environment. However, this amount is just a “crumble ” of the recycling potential of the country, which is estimated to be about 600 million pesos a year.
More and more often, companies are reluctant to implement programs 3Rs (reuse, reduce and recycle), while NGOs and informal workers become collectors of materials and then sell or trade them for food.
It is explained that this transformation in relation to waste appears in the country, because there are free zone companies that aim to not only  export plastic materials in compact form, but now they turn it into foil, and are beginning to transform to generate the granules, which is how this industry purchases this raw material “.
But more than that, the Chinese industry has been established in the country wants to make synthetic fiber, and a ton costs thousands of dollars, which makes PET, but for those they need more than four thousand tons per month and only is generating about ten thousand tons, of which one is recovering two thousand four hundred tons nationwide.
