US, Canada pace 12% jump in Dominican Republic tourism
Santo Domingo.- United States and Canada have consolidated their rank as Dominican tourism’s main pillars, while the country is also boosted by the European market’s recovery and more visitors from South America.
The Central Bank said the number of foreign visitors in the first half jumped nearly 12% and forecasts sustained arrivals for the rest of the year.
It said the tourism industry’s growth reflects the “successful strategies implemented by the Ministry of Tourism in close collaboration with the hotel industry, which has managed to consolidate the country’s leading position in the Caribbean area.”
Tourism minister Francisco Javier García on Sunday said the sector posted record growth of 12.8% in August, with 424,715 arrivals.
The Central Bank stressed that the arrival of non-resident foreign visitors “has shown extraordinary performance” with 2.8 million visitors during the first seven months, of 238,823 additional tourists.
