Unigold: 3 Dominican Republic workers died mining gold illegally
Santo Domingo.- The mining company Unigold on Tuesday distanced itself from an incident in which three workers died and two were injured while extracting gold near the town Restauracion, Dajabón province (northwest).
The company which mines the area said the victims were allegedly extracting gold illegally.
First responders from Dajabón, Valverde and Santiago Rodríguez provinces Tuesday morning resumed the search for the bodies of Mario Santana Durán and Custodio de los Santos, while the body of engineer Ramón Gutierrez Parra(Monchy), who headed the excavation, was recovered Monday night.
Meanwhile the workers identified as Jesús Gutiérrez -Monchy’s brother- and Virgilio de la Rosa were taken to Ramón Matías Mella hospital.
Local media report that the men died from inhaling carbon monoxide from a power plant operating at the site.
