Top official announces RD$700.0M road works in north coast
Santiago.- Public Works minister Gonzalo Castillo on Wednesday announced the start of a call for tenders in the coming days, for the reconstruction of the Navarrete-Maimon (northwest) highway and an access to the cruise ship dock slated to start operations in 2015.
He said the road from Maimon to Puerto Plata will be rebuilt in a second phase.
In a meeting with business leaders the official also announced the reconstruction of the Luperon tourist road, damaged by new landslides.
Santiago and North region business associations have been demanding the work, as the constant landslides and sinkholes cause serious damage to the roads and in the case of tourism, practically halt traffic to the north coast.
According to the official Public Works will spend RD$700.0 million on the Santiago-Puerto Plata road, with funds already included in the 2015 budget.
Castillo, in the meeting with Puerto Plata, Sosua and Cabarete hoteliers Andres Pastoriza, Marcos Villanueva, Cuqui Silverio, Luis Liriano and Roberio Casoni, and Deputy Tourism minister Julio Almonte, added that the works will ease the flow of traffic in and out of the Carnival cruise port.
