There were more femicides than deaths from dengue fever this year so far
There have been 117 femicides so far this year (to 20 July 2014) according to the Minister of Women, Alejandrina German. This is a 54% increase compared to the same period last year. She described the situation as “an epidemic” despite all efforts by the Ministry and other institutions over the last 10 years.
She went on to say there were more femicides than deaths from dengue fever, cholera or chikungunya and attributed the increase in numbers was due to violence, crime and hit-men.
German was speaking during a meeting of the National Commission for the Prevention and Fight against Domestic Violence (CONAPLUVI), held yesterday, Thursday 24 July 2014, which was also attended by Women’s Prosecutor
Roxanna Reyes, Culture Minister Jose Antonio Rodriguez and public prosecutor Andrea Villa Camacho, from the Domestic Violence Unit.
