The PLD is 41 and has already governed 14 years
SANTO DOMINGO. The Dominican Liberation Party (PLD) arrives today at the 41st anniversary of its foundation, after being created in 1973 by the former President Juan Bosch when he left the Dominican Revolutionary Party (PRD), together with a group of party leaders.
It took the PLD 23 years to reach the Presidential Palace, but it did not do it with its founder and leader, but rather under the strategy of its vice presidential candidate for the 1994 elections, Leonel Fernandez.
Analysts have said that the PLD began its route to power, after accepting the offer of former President Joaquin Balaguer to occupy the presidency of the Chamber of Deputies, which Bosch opposed.
As a consequence of the triumph the position to access positions of power, Norge Botello was president of the Chamber of Deputies from 1990 to 1993; today’s President, Danilo Medina, from 1994 to 1995; and José Ramon Fadul, from 1995 to 1996.
In the Juan Bosch Congress, held in 2001, the PLD started the process of widespread growth, which took it from some 34,000 members to a voter roll of more than 2 million rank-and-file members today.
The 2nd round of voting with the support of Balaguer in the “Patriotic Front”, held on 30 June 1996, was the start of four periods of government by the PLD which were only interrupted by the PRD victory in 2000.
Fernandez has been president from 1996 – 2000, and 2004 – 2008 and 2008 – 2012. Medina is currently at the halfway point of his administration which will end in 2016.
Highs and lows in the 4 periods
On 16 August 2016, the PLD will finish 16 years and 4 periods of government, with highs and lows. Among the positive points of the first 3 periods of government are the modernization of the state, the development of important projects for transportation, above all in Greater Santo Domingo and the investment in the state University stand out. Among the negatives, are the accusations against officials who committed acts of corruption, and little support for farm production. The present administration is recognized for its investment in education and the support of micro-farmers.
