The Dominican Society of Newspapers creates commission to monitor freedom of the press in the country
SANTO DOMINGO. The Dominican Society of Newspapers (SDD) approved during its extraordinary general assembly of 2014 the formation of a Commission of Freedom of the Press which will occupy itself by recording and monitoring the threats and violations of freedom of expression and of the press in the country.
The commission of freedom of the press of the SDD is composed of the newspaper directors Rafael Molina Morillo of El Dia; Miguel Franjul of the Listin Diario; Bienvenido Alvarez Vega of Hoy; and the Emmanuel Castillo of La Inforacion in Santiago. The commission will report to the Plenary of the SDD every 6 months.
They created a special fund to finance the activities of projects for the training of reporters and their normal operational expenses. This fund will be supplied with contributions from newspapers such as the Diario Libre, El Dia, El Nacioal de Ahora!, El Caribe. La Informacion, El Nuevo Diario, Hoy and Listin Diario. The SDD issued a note of satisfaction at the end of the assembly over the elimination in the new Penal Code of the clauses which existed which penalized with prison sentences the crime of defamation and slander by the media.
And the organization has the hope that the Constitutional Tribunal which has taken on an appeal of unconstitutionality of several articles of law 6132 regarding freedom of expression, will also remove the other penalties enforced against the crimes of all offensive words when they decide on the case which was presented by a group of newspaper directors in 2013.
The directors approved the introduction of amendments to the original statutes in order to accept in the entity the fundamental principles of the Chapultepec Declaration regarding freedom of expression.
The extraordinary General assembly was chaired by its president, Persio Maldonado, the director of the Nuevo Diario. Also present were José L Corripio, the President of the Corripio Communications Group; Arturo Pellerano and Manuel Pellerano, the President and Vice President respectively of the Diario Libre Group; Priamo Rodriguez, the President of La Editora La Informacion, as well as newspaper directors Osvaldo Santana, of El Caribe; Adriana Miguel Tejada, of Diario Libre; Miguel Franjul, of the Listin Diario; Emmanuel Castillo of La Informacion; Bienvenido Alvarez Vega, of Hoy; Rafael Molina Morillo, of El Dia and José Antonio Torres, representing El Nacional de Ahora!
