Sunwing Airlines start flying in February 2015 between Buffalo and Punta Cana
An international tour operator, who this winter will begin flight service between Buffalo and two popular, warm-weather vacation destinations, landed here not because of the Southern Ontario residents who use Buffalo Niagara International Airport but, rather, to get a larger foothold of the Upstate New York market.
Sunwing Airlines, beginning in Jan. 17 will start flying direct air service between Buffalo and Cancun and then, one month later between Buffalo and Punta Cana, with an eye towards luring those from the region who otherwise travel to Toronto for direct flights to those destinations. Sunwing, in conjunction with its sister company, Vacation Express, sells all-inclusive packages to both Mexico and the Dominican Republic — among other destinations.
But, the catch is for Southern Ontario residents, the packages are being marketed under the Sunwing corporate moniker while in the U.S., the company is using the Vacation Express brand name.
Rene Jongmans, Vacation Express president, said the Sunwing name is well-established in Ontario while the Vacation Express brand is better known on this side of the Peace Bridge. Buffalo is the only market where Vacation Express/Sunwing operates where the company will use the separate bi-national corporate brands.
“We almost have to keep our names separate,” Jongmans said. “It’s great that we can use both entities.”
The bigger component to the story is that the flights mark the first time in recent memory that air service from Buffalo Niagara International Airport headed to a true international destination.
