Sewage system RD$27M rebuild aims to clean up Boca Chica’s ‘dirty’ beach

Boca Chica, Dominican Republic.-  Boca Chica’s water and sanitation utility (CORAABO) and the Tourism Ministry on Monday launched the reconstruction of the municipality’s wastewater treatment plant aimed at cleaning up the beach and the area’s aquifers.

CORAABO director Fermín Brito said the work costs RD$27 million, contributed by Tourism, with RD$13 million already advanced to start the work.

He said the waste water pollutes the iconic beach and the underground river Brujuela, whose mouth is the seaside resort, known for its lack of clean beaches.

Brito said the work forms part of infrastructure reconstructions promised by president Danilo Medina and noted that the plant’s damaged the intakes and drives will be repaired, to treat Boca Chica’s sewage and that from surrounding villages.

“The drainage works are already built we will now proceed to connect businesses, residences, hotels and so on, so that there’s a system to handle waste water and raw sewage,” the official said.
