Rise of youth gangs worrisome
SANTO DOMINGO. The Chief of Police, Major General Manuel Castro Castillo, revealed yesterday that international organized crime, as a way of guaranteeing its operations, has sponsored powerful gangs of young persons, which are tearing up Latin American countries.
Castro Castillo said that in the Dominican Republic “we are seeing with some worry the growth of groups of juvenile criminal gangs, as well as boys and girls between eight and 12 years of age who are already drug addicts and have already joined in the criminal and illegal activities as their only way of living.”
The Police chief expounded his feelings as he swore in 426 boys and girls in the First Class of Juvenile Community Police, carried out yesterday in the Club Mauricio Baez.
During the activity the Central Director of the Community Police, General Rafael Athualpa Cabrera Sarita, said that the members of the first graduating class went through a six month course, where they received classes such as human relations, civic and patriotic knowledge and other courses.
Cabrera Sarita announced that the second class is already in training and will be ready for the Christmas season and has nearly 600 members.
