Puerto Plata Carnival Will Kick Off January 2015
The 2015 Carnival celebrations in the north coast city of Puerto Plata are scheduled to begin on Saturday, January 24 with the crowning of the celebration’s “King Momo.”
The kick off will take place at Ocean World Adventure Park, Marina & Casino in the coastal town of Cofresi, outside of Puerto Plata the north coast’s most important city.
From then on carnival activities will take place every Sunday in February beginning at 3:00 p.m. Carnival celebrations will end on Sunday, March 8.
Next year’s Carnival celebration will kick off with the theme “Puerto Plata’s Carnival: An International Experience,” and is sponsored by the Ministry of Culture, local hotels, and the Tourism Cluster of Puerto Plata.
National and international tourists participate in this colorful annual celebration.
One of the Carnival’s iconic characters is the figure of “Taimáscaro,” a fictional character that blends the rich traditions of the local Taino culture (the original inhabitants of the island), as well as African and Spanish cultural elements.
The “Taimáscaro” costume is adorned with seashells and the mask is that of a Taino “Cemi,” an Indian god.
The carnival also provides participants with the best music in town.
