Public Transport Options
There are few fairly inexpensive ways to get around.
Guagua’s – mini buses
You can stop them at any spot of the road, they are normally crammed with people during rush hours. The cost of a trip as of July, 2014:
Sosua – Puerto Plata RD$35-40
Cabarete – Sosua RD$25
Cabarete – Puerto Plata RD$50
They will await you at any busy corner of the street. The cost varies from RD$25 around the city to RD$100 to a far distance.
Taxi Publico (Carritos)
These are old fairly run down vehicles (type of Toyota Carola etc), but you can still get around in them fairly fast and inexpensive. The driver can cram in up to 8 people (including sharing his own seat with you, which of course we don’t recommend). The cost is from RD$25 to RD$50 depending on the distance. After 6pm the tariff doubles up.
These are normal cabs/mini vans, most of them have aircon, and comfortable seats. The cost can be shared among the whole group. Sosua – Cabarete area from RD$250. The drivers of such taxi’s normally offer tours as well.
