Prominent Dominican doctor is news again, this time Medicare
Washington.- Prominent, Miami based Dominican eye doctor Salomon Melgen tops the list of U.S. Medicare payments, whose relationship with senator Robert Menéndez (D-NJ) made headlines in 2013 when it was learned that the lawmaker had traveled to Dominican Republic aboard the physician’s private jet, AP reports.
Analyzing Government health care figures released Wednesday, Medicare has paid Melgen US$20.8 million.
AP notes that of a small group of more than 825,000 individual physicians in Medicare’s billing database, 344 had income of at least US$3.0 million each, for a total of nearly US$1.5 billion.
The news agency chose the three million limit because it was the figure used by the inspector general audit of Health and Human Services, which last year recommended that Medicare automatically scrutinize the total fees that exceeded a certain level.
Around one in four of the doctors who were given the biggest payments – 87 – practice in Florida, a State famous for its high Medicare costs and frequent frauds.
California figures second on the list of the five States with the highest number of doctors with high income from Medicare with 38, followed by New Jersey, 27; Texas with 23 and New York, 18.
