No more trucks on the Capital’s famous Malecon
Santo Domingo.- The Metropolitan Transit Authority (AMET) on Monday announced the enforcement of the City Council’s ban of all heavy vehicle traffic along the seaside Malecon (Washington Av.) between Meriño St. and Maximo Gomez Av.
AMET director Juan Gerónimo said the ban has been in effect for several days. “AMET agents are posted mostly in the intersection with Maximo Gomez avenue, from where northward traffic will be detoured from the entrance to Independencia Av., next to the Obelisk, where truck drivers try to continue on the Malecon from there.”
He said the entrance to Caamaño Av. (El Puerto) is also controlled. “Truck drivers know they cannot pass. That’s their limit, only those who have the authorization can pass”.
In that regard, City Council Urban Transit director Ángel Segura said around 95 authorizations were issued for trucks to travel exclusively to Santo Domingo Port.
