“La Barquita” will show that transformation is possible
SANTO DOMINGO. The president of the Cuesta National Center and the chairman of the commission of the La Barquita project, José Miguel Gonzalez Cuadra, indicated on the Dialogo Libre that the main thing that can be achieved in the La Nueva Barquita project is the social transformation of the inhabitants, so that they have implemented plans which include literacy programs for all the people that live in the sector, as well as training workshops.
“We have told them that they are the real leaders, that if we cannot demonstrate to the people that this is worthwhile, not by giving a house, but rather because we achieve the transformation so that you can be self-sustaining in the future. Thereare not going to be other projects like this. Here, there are a lot of people that need us to give them a hand,” he said
Gonzalez Cuadra admitted that in spite of the fact that they said that in a first stage the housing would be delivered in phases, they have decided to distribute the immense majority altogether. The tentative date is at the end of next year. “What we decided was not to begin to move so as not to generate a sensation that we were already moving (people) and that it was now up and running, because at times this is to generate a sensation that there are people moving in. Then we concluded that it was best if we were going to move the great majority all together next year. The persons of La Barquita know this, that it is like this. This is a project where the community is the leadership,” he explained.
He recalled that in addition to the mobilization of the persons outside the area subject to flooding, they are building a city that will be sustainable over time. “They are designing products in order to launch them with the La Barquita brand, in other words, that they have become empowered and this for me is already the most positive thing in this project,” he concluded.
