Italy will shutter its embassy in Dominican Republic
Santo Domingo.- Bucking a trend, Italy has announced it will shutter its embassy in Dominican Republic by December 31, listin.com.do reports Friday, quoting its Foreign Ministry’s PR director Massimiliano Lagi.
The official said the closing stems from an executive order from Rome to review costs, which require precise numerical targets and reduces Italy’s diplomatic offices abroad, with deadlines issued to achieve those figures.
He added that Italian citizens in the Dominican Republic and other Caribbean countries can get assistance at the embassies in Panama and Washington or its consulate in Miami.
The surprising announcement bucks the trend of the last decade when countries as far away as Dubai and Malaysia have announced the opening of embassies in the Dominican Republic.
