Irony: Dominicans shun tobacco despite being major growers

New York.- Ironically Dominicans are the U.S. Latinos which smoke the least, despite the fact their country figures among the world’s leading tobacco producers, says a study by the Yeshiva University’s School of Medicine, in Manhattan.

Citing data from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in Atlanta, the report notes to just 12.5% of Latinos in the U. S. have a smoking habit, which places Hispanics at the second position among ethnic groups which reject tobacco.

However a recent study by the National Institutes of Health says that among its poll of the more than 16,000 Hispanics living in the U.S. found significant variations among Latinos.

Chosen for the study were 6,532 men averaging 40.3 years of age and 9,700 women of 41.8 years of age.

Among Puerto Rican men 35% smoke compared with only 11% of Dominicans; Cubans men 31% and women 21.9 percent, while smoking among immigrants from Mexicans and Central and South American figure among the U.S. national average.

In Dominican Republic

Dominicans in general aren’t heavy smokers, and the local trend reveals a decline in recent years.
