Investors see the Capital’s filthy river as a tourist attraction

Santo Domingo.- Can a virtual sewage become a tourist attraction? That’s a question being asked more frequently lately about the Capital’s iconic waterway; the Ozama River.

Despite its highly polluted waters, the authorities’ historical neglect, years of daily abuse by people and industries, the Ozama can still positively transform the face of the first European city of the Americas, just with clear goals and political will.

The Ozama River is born at Loma Siete Cabezas (hill of the seven heads) of the Sierra de Yamasa range, lazily winding its way through 148 kilometers of flatlands.

Among its tributaries figure the rivers Yamasa, Guanuma, La Savita, La Isabela Yabacao and Cachon de la Rubia.

Several proposals to clean up the Ozama and develop luxury residences along its banks have emerged during the last few years, most notable that of an Italian investor.
