How to use the La Romana Bypass

The La Romana bypass, from the day of its inauguration, has become one of the busiest routes in the Eastern region of the Dominican Republic, with an increased traffic flow due to the holiday season, but also because it connects the “Autopista del Coral” (from La Romana to Punta Cana) with “La Autovia del Este” (to Santo Domingo).

And while we LOVE the new La Romana Bypass (it gets us to Santo Domingo in less than 1 hour), we have gotten a little lost using it… So here we bring you some simple instructions on how to use it – so you don’t make the same mistakes we did the first (and second) time we used it!

How to use the La Romana Bypass (and not get lost)

From Casa de Campo to Santo Domingo:

  1. Turn right out of the Casa de Campo main gate.
  2. When you arrive to the highway go straight over the bridge (across the highway).
  3. Turn left down the ramp and onto the highway.
  4. After about 5 minutes you will come across a toll for RD$100.
  5. Keep driving until you reach Santo Domingo!

From Santo Domingo to Casa de Campo:

  1. Leave Santo Domingo on the same highway we have always used to get to La Romana / Casa de Campo.
  2. When arriving to La Romana, you will see a signpost for “La Romana” – this does NOT take you to Casa de Campo. You will see ”La Romana” signposted straight on and then “Higuey – Punta Cana” to the right. This is where you get on the La Romana Bypass to avoid La Romana town center – so here you need to take the right turn signposted  ”Higuey – Punta Cana”. Straight on takes you to the outskirts of La Romana – where the highway originally entered the town (near the Francisco Micheli stadium).
  3. Now that you are on the La Romana Bypass, after the toll (RD$100), there is an exit signposted “La Romana”, which takes you to the center/top of La Romana – near the Fundación MIR girls school, so do not take it.
  4. The next exit is signposted La Romana and Casa de Campo – that’s the Casa de Campo exit.
  5. Once you come off the highway drive straight along the road and you’ll see the Casa de Campo main entrance on your left. The sign for La Romana and Higuey – Punta Cana – go RIGHT for the Bypass

Although this isn’t the “La Romana Bypass”, these instructions on how to get to Punta Cana – Bavaro from Casa de Campo on the ”Autopista del Coral” may also be useful:

From Casa de Campo to Punta Cana – Bavaro:

  1. Turn right out of the Casa de Campo main gate.
  2. When you arrive to the highway turn left and join the highway.
  3. Along the way you will need to pay 2 tolls: RD$50 and RD$100 (these also need to be paid on the way back)
